Tax Preparation

 

Services

Free tax preparation and filing is offered at CRT vita sites operating between February 1 and April 15. The goals for this initiative include:
- To increase the number of working families that qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Care Tax Credit (CTC)
- To reduce the amount of EITC and CTC tax dollars lost to tax preparation fees
- To increase the number of free tax preparation sites
- To promote the use of EITC and CTC dollars as a gateway to asset building through financial literacy training.

 

Eligibility Requirements

Tax preparation and filing services is for low to moderate income people (under $38,000).

 

Application Process

IRS trained volunteers at CRT Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites offer the free tax filing assistance from February 1 - April 15 at 8 sites in Hartford, Middletown and East Hartford. CRT VITA volunteers help taxpayers prepare basic tax return forms, where the primary source of income is from wages and salaries. The tax returns are filed electronically from the sites at no cost. Filed electronically, refunds are generally received within 2 weeks.
