Grocery Delivery Program for Seniors

Services

Many seniors find they are unable to do their own grocery shopping because they lack transportation, stamina to walk around the supermarket, or strength to carry the groceries into their homes. Others may be temporarily homebound because of bad weather or an illness.

Elders living in Greater Hartford can have groceries delivered to their homes twice each month, without paying a delivery fee. From fresh produce and meats to dishwashing liquid and laundry soap, the program will deliver everything that is normally found on supermarket shelves. Delivery staff will bring the bags directly into the customers’ homes. Funding is provided through the North Central Area Agency on Aging.

Our service contributes to our clients’ dignity and independence by helping to sustain good health, reducing the
frequency of hospitalizations and reducing the likelihood of nursing home placements.

Two Deliveries Per Month

This program covers the delivery costs for two grocery orders per month. Each order must total at least $40. Drivers bring groceries into the home or apartment.

Order What You Need

Customers receive a weekly circular, and place their orders by phone. The market confirms total cost and
delivery date. Payment must be made by credit card, check or exact change; no change is available from
the driver. Coupons may be used, but they will be deducted from the next order.

Donation from Customers

Customers are asked to donate $1 per delivery, or whatever they can afford. However, no one is denied
if unable to pay. These small donations help subsidize the delivery, so that we may provide this vital service
to more elders. A separate donation letter will be mailed. Additional orders (more than twice per month) will
be charged $10 for delivery.

Eligibility Requirements

The program serves those who are at least 60 years old and their spouses. Nutrition Services staff must assess that they are in need of the delivery service.
